ULTRAKILL Early Access Review: Hell of a good time.

Overview:

Ultrakill was one of the biggest FPS Steam hits from recent years. I never saw myself playing it until I was looking for some retro shooters. I took a chance and was shocked. Ultrakill is quite possibly the greatest indie I've ever played.

Plot

When Ultrakill starts off it drops you right in with barely any context. All you know is you are a blood fueled machine blasting your way through hell. But as the game continues you learn more and more story bits and character lore. As I continued I found myself pretty invested in discovering all I could about the Ultrakill universe.
The story behind each enemy and character is extremely well done. And discovering more about the Universe is a great time. I constantly tried to uncover every secret I could. The backstories of Gabriel, Minos, V2 and more are all very intricate and well done.

Gameplay

Ultrakill's fast paced action packed adrenalin fueled gameplay is absolutely master class. The movement is fast and fluid and the guns are perfect. There's a firearm for everyone in Ultrakill. If close combat is your thing, Bust out the Sawed On and it's dangerous Chainsaw shotgun combo. Rather decimate your adversaries from a distance? Use the Malicious Railgun!. Each gun has its own strengths and weaknesses. But there are some I never really used in my playthrough. Namely the Timestop Rocket Launcher and the Marksman Revolver.
Ultrakill's level design is also extremely well done. Arenas perfectly designed for massive battles, Doom style backtracking, special objectives and secrets are all here. Ultrakill's many levels require quick thinking, parkour and combat skills to win. And it's ranking system motivates you to constantly try to boost your score. One of the best parts of Ultrakill's level design is that the levels never get boring.  I've played the same levels multiple times and they never got old.
Ultrakill's hyperviolent combat is absolutely incredible.  And it's standout gimmick is unique and very well used. Blood is literally HP as the main gimmick of the game is that your enemies blood recovers your HP. This motivates you to get in close and obliterate your enemies with close quarters combat. All this action is accompanied by a adrenalin inducing fast paced rock soundtrack. Ultrakill's epic movement is perfectly suited for the arenas as well. You'll be dashing, sliding and ground slamming your way through some of my favorite FPS levels I've ever played.
And the Bosses. These are some of my favorite Boss Fights out of any shooter game. V2 is a fast paced 1V1 and proof we need Ultrakill Deathmatch, Gabriel is a extremely tough opponent who requires a lot of skill to beat, The colossal Corpse Of King Minos is a unique fight in every way, And the Earthmover is a perfect usage of an environmental boss. Each boss in Ultrakill is a unique and incredible battle.
Ultrakill also is host to a ridiculously bloody sandbox mode. The sandbox mode is played on copy of the iconic Gm_Construct from Garry's Mod, and it's still pretty ridiculous. You could use it to practice... but you probably won't.
And last but definitely not least is the CyberGrind.  An absolutely ruthless gauntlet of endless waves of enemies. The CyberGrind is an absolute blast in Ultrakill. The CyberGrind is basically proof that all retro/arena/boomer shooters need endless modes. Doom 2016 and Quake 2 with endless modes would be absolutely amazing. CyberGrind is perfect for players who just have some time to kill and also for competitive players.

Verdict
Ultrakill is an absolute masterclass in FPS combat and movement. And it's one of the best indies I've ever played.
