R.E.P.O. Early Access Review: Another great Indie.

 Overview

R.E.P.O. is a Co-Op Horror game in Steam Early Access. I didn't see myself playing it until a friend told me about it. But R.E.P.O is one of the best Multiplayer games I've played in a while.

Lore

While R.E.P.O does not have a defined plot... it does have a large amount of Lore. R.E.P.O.'s story is told through environmental storytelling. There are plenty of mysteries you will want to explore.
Communicating with the mysterious "Taxman"
The levels and monsters also have a lot of lore behind them. The creepy "Headman Manor" is full of secrets and the strange "Swiftbroom Acadamy" is more of the same. Developer Semiwork has teased the lore in their videos and hinted at monster and character origins. Fans are already trying to piece together what happened in this strange world on the steam community. Gamers looking for mysteries to solve will have some fun in REPO. I know I'm already on the hunt for clues. Another key lore element is the AI Taxman. The Taxman communicates to your Semibot using emojis only. The Semiwork team said there is a "Lore Reason" for this and players are already rushing to find out more. The environmental storytelling is a great fit for a game like REPO.

Gameplay

The gameplay follows this loop: Start game, collect valuable items, avoid monsters, extract valuables, escape, shop and repeat. With each level increasing in difficulty. Levels will also make you extract more and more valuables at more extraction points. But REPO has a unique trait: Physics. REPO is a Physics based game and that makes all the difference. Every playthrough I've had has been different. Add in some friends and it's really different.
Hiding from Trudge.

Each of the monsters has their own deadly trait. Whether it's the slow but incredibly powerful Trudge, or the seemingly harmless Apex Predator, every monster can kill you if you aren't careful. Each monster is well designed. However, there are a few issues with the difficulty. When you begin to play R.E.P.O. you will have to get better fast. I was unfortunate to begin with Single Player mode. With no difficulty settings or easier modes for beginners, I was quickly overwhelmed in my first few games. The difficulty can be edited with the use of mods. The modding community is very active in REPO. There are plenty of mods that add everything from new monsters to cosmetics. I found myself using Quality of Life mods the most though. There are some fun mods to spice up the REPO format. But my favorites don't change things up too much.
Hiding from The Headman

REPO is definitely not easy. Singleplayer mode is incredibly hard and somewhat terrifying. Multiplayer is more comedic than scary though. But it's not any easier.
A Robe sneaks up behind our team.
The valuable collection system is pretty fun as well. Me and a friend moved a Rhino in a glass case through Headman Manor together and it was pretty fun. The more fragile or heavy an item is the more valuable it is. For example: A toy doll worth 600$ will take less damage when it hits an object but a 2,600$ diamond will break as soon as it hits something. The physics system really makes a difference. As of right now there is only matchmaking in the Open Beta and the base game is limited to friends only multiplayer.

Verdict

When I heard about R.E.P.O. For the first time I didn't think much of it. Turns out I was wrong. R.E.P.O.'s Tough Monsters, Physics based gameplay and unhinged multiplayer make it a standout indie. At a low price of 9.99$ It's well worth the buy. R.E.P.O. is a ton of fun solo or with friends. Even if Horror games aren't your thing, you can still have fun in its Multiplayer.

R.E.P.O. Has a... interesting visual style that fits the theme well. It's nothing shocking but if you don't like it there are mods you can easily use to enhance the graphics.
