Rapid Reviews: VR Games Round 1.

This is the first of my "Rapid Reviews" Posts. In these I will write quick Reviews of 3 - 7 games or so. This is round one of VR games.

I will note the version of the game I am reviewing as well as there are differences between platforms.

(Execution will be rated on ports)

SUPERHOT: VR (SteamVR)

Superhot VR was one of the first SteamVR games I got. It's also one of the older games. It's also one of the best shooters I've ever played. Superhot VR is a blend of Puzzle and FPS. The premise of the game is that time only moves when you move. This is amazing in VR. Instead of making split second decisions like in the movies, each action is a carefully thought-out move.  The game is spread out over multiple challenge-like levels. After clearing all of these you unlock endless mode. Endless mode provides a fun and arcadey experience. Superhot VR obviously focuses on gameplay, as there is essentially no soundtrack, and the plot is not the best. However, the gameplay and mechanics are incredible. Superhot VR chooses to focus on gameplay overall and is better for it. It's minimalist approach to graphics looks great in VR too. Superhot VR Looks and feels amazing and is one of my favorite VR games.

The first level in Superhot VR.

Graphics: 91

Superhot VR kept it simple with graphics and it was the right choice.

Gameplay: 95

Innovative, Incredible, and extremely fun to play.

Plot: 55

The wonky plotline really doesn't make any sense.

Soundtrack: NR

I'm not rating the soundtrack as there basically is none and it doesn't affect the game at all.

Overall: 96 🌟

SUPERHOT VR does a great job of making you feel like a superhero. It's extremely fun to play and it's almost impossible to put down.

Job Simulator (Meta)

Job simulator is one of the oldest VR games out there. Owlchemy labs VR hit is available on almost every headset out there. Even the apple vision pro! This was THE VR game. I picked this up on my 3s with a coupon and ended up playing it for 3 hours. It's extremely fun. But how I don't actually know. But unfortunately, it loses its appeal after a while. While it's fun for the first couple of hours, one job is boring, and the endless mode becomes repetitive after a while. Office Worker and Gourmet Chef are much more fun than Auto Mechanic and Store Clerk. The endless mode for Gormet Chef is probably the most fun. Job Simulator, after the first playthrough, Is probably better as a party game. With a group of friends taking turns in its goofy environments and jobs. But at its low sale price of about 14 dollars, it's probably worth the buy. Job sim is a source of ton of goofy fun. You can do anything with what you can find in your work area. Job Simulator's zany chaos is a great VR starting point. It also supports hand tracking. Which is a rarity among VR games.
I don't even know what I made.

Graphics: 85

While not the best VR graphics I've seen, Job Sim looks great in its cartoony art style.

Gameplay: 80

A fun and enjoyable experience... For a while.

Soundtrack: NR

Similar to SUPERHOT VR, Job Sim has no soundtrack, and it doesn't affect the game.

Plot: NR

Same with the soundtrack. No Plot. Just Job.

Overall: 76 💥

Job Simulator is a ton of fun when you first get it. But its fun runs out over the course of several hours.

Among Us VR (Meta)

Innersloth's social deduction hit comes to VR in this great multiplayer title. However, it's definitely not flawless. While still being a fun experience Among Us VR really needs more content to stand up to the original. Skeld II is a bare bones Among Us experience. There are a limited number of tasks and there are more boring ones than fun ones. VR is a great opportunity to make doing tasks as a crewmate really fun. But Among Us VR just doesn't capitalize on this in Skeld II. Polus Point is another story. Among Us VR's second map is much better than its first map. The tasks are more fun, it's much bigger, and it looks great as well. There are LTM modes and maps that I haven't had the chance to try yet though. Here's what it definitely needs though: More tasks. Among Us VR needs more tasks that capitalize on the VR environment. Second, More maps. Polus is great but Skeld loses its appeal after a lot of matches played here. I would like Mira HQ VR. Third: Server list. I really wish there was a game browser rather than the quick match button. The original Among Us makes it easy to find good games. But in VR I'm usually thrown into lobbies with one or two players or a terrible host. And to make matters worse whenever I finally find a good lobby I'm almost always disconnected. Among Us VR has SERIOUS disconnection issues. Among Us VR seems to have a lot of missed opportunities but is still a good game. At a sale price of 5.99 its worth it. If you can find a good game and not disconnect you will have a quality Among Us experience. (Luckily there is a new update coming soon.)
The game will be rebranded to Among Us 3D soon with console and VR crossplay.

Execution: 65

While executing some of the game well, Among Us VR has so many missed opportunities.

Graphics: 80

The cartoony style works. It's not perfect but it works.

Soundtrack: NR

See all the above games.

Plot: NR

Multiplayer games don't usually have a plot.

Gameplay: 87

While some of the tasks are boring and tedious the rest of the game plays well.

Overall: 82🌠

Among Us VR is a fun and enjoyable multiplayer game with lots of room for improvement. The new update also should improve the game significantly.

DOOM: VFR (SteamVR)

This VR port is anything but flawless. When you first start the game on Quest using Steam Link you get multiple random "Controller Disconnected errors." These become less frequent as you progress but are REALLY annoying early on. Parts of the late game would randomly crash for no reason (My PC is above requirements) And you have to start classic maps to fix it. However, while not flawless there is plenty Doom VFR does right. The graphics are amazing, and the gunplay is superb. But movement is a little hard to figure out. The options are jump movement and a sort of scoot. (There are smooth locomotion options that took me a while to find.) To jump you push down the trackpad or control stick and point it in the direction you want to go. This is really not a great movement set for control sticks. I definitely recommend using smooth movement. The graphics are pretty good as well. All the VR Doom environments look great. And shooting demons in VR feels great. Doom VFR is a mixed bag but comes out on the positive side. Its good side outweighs its bad side.

Execution: 67

A buggy but good adaptation of Doom 2016.

Soundtrack: 100

The Doom series' metal soundtrack is one of the best.

Graphics: 70

Looks impressive for a Rift game.

Plot: 60

As with Doom the plot isn't really the focus.

Gameplay: 80

Movement is not great, but shooting is.

Overall: 79 💥

Doom VFR is a fun but flawed port.

Population: ONE (Meta)

This is probably my favorite battle royale. Whereas other FTP games beg you for money, you actually have to look to find the only microtransactions. They actually give you some of the coolest skins for free! I got a really cool character in a military themed hazard suit for free. The weapons are also pretty well done. Reloading is simple and fast, and the guns all shoot and look great. There's a weapon for every playstyle. As opposed to other VR multiplayer games like VAIL (Review coming soon!) There is no jumping in Population one. Instead, there is the VCS or Vertical Combat System. You can climb anything on the map. And you can glide as well. There also is a building mechanic that I don't really use. Seems a lot like Fortnite in VR at first but there are multiple differences that are for the better. First: Population One requires ACTUAL SKILL to win rather than a crappy anime weapon. Second: Population One gives away skins and gold for challenges and rewards whereas Fortnite demands your money. And last: You can enjoy Population One on meta for free and still get rewards. There are multiple rewards you can earn by simply playing training modes. There is a shortage of official modes though. But there are some pretty good community made maps. I wanted to play a VR multiplayer shooter they day I got my headset, and this is one of the best I played. Definitely recommend.

Soundtrack: NR

No soundtrack.

Plot: NR

No plot

Graphics: 80

It looks great but there is plenty of room for improvement.

Gameplay: 83

Great gunplay and inventive combat. Some features (Mainly building) aren't used well though.

Overall: 83 🌠

Population One is a great FTP title. One thing it could benefit from is more official game modes though.

There is my first round of rapid VR reviews. My next round will include reviews of Batman: Arkham Shadow, VAIL VR, Boneworks, Half Life Alyx and Budget Cuts Ultimate.
